San Manuel Donates $100,000 to Second Harvest Food Bank

The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians announced Tuesday it will donate $100,000 to the Second Harvest Food Bank of San Bernardino and Riverside counties, which provides food to the region's needy.

Tribal officials will present a check to the nonprofit on Friday at its inaugural Summer Challenge Food Drive at Arrowhead Credit Union Park in San Bernardino. The event, hosted by the Inland Empire 66ers, will take place during the third inning of the baseball game between the 66ers and the High Desert Mavericks.
The San Manuels' donation comes at a time when escalating gas and food prices and the subprime mortgage crisis have left many struggling to make ends meet. "It really is hitting at a time when we are trying to provide as many resources as we can, and this is really going to facilitate that," said Daryl Brock, executive director of Second Harvest.
The San Bernardino-Riverside county chapter is the 24th largest in the country, distributing about 22 1/2 million pounds of food a year, Brock said. Second Harvest initially sought the tribe's assistance with one of its events, but the tribe, noting the rise in food prices and other essentials, decided to do more, tribal Chairman James Ramos said in a news release.

Isn't that about the same amount tha they pay themselves each?? per month??..I think I have read on here that the per capita for SanManuel was about $100,000? a month??

Thats a tiny fraction of amount that they pull out of the economy from their neighbors...did they do a pess release to let everyone know how generous they are?...should have been millions!!..its all from the patrons that go to their Casinos...look at those huge houses up above San Manuel... they should thank all of the losers that come and play!!

This is just one charity on one single day. It's not their whole spending on charity.

They aren't required to give all they make or all they have left over. It's ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS.

I've SEEN Lyn Valbuena Vice Chairman of San Manuel pay $5,000 out of her pocketbook for charity, without batting an eye.

People like RB Sr of Pechanga didn't even want his daughter in law to get any money for the kids if his son died.

It was a good deed no matter which way you look at it, even though the members get about $130,000 per month, it has gone up since we all read the news articles about all the corruption taking place in that tribe. The new Chairman is trying hard to clean up and get the criminal element under control. We will see how that pans out. GOOD LUCK TO HIM

why would she bat an eye?...its like play money to them...$130,000 A MONTH....and they don't even have to work for it...and think about the good publicity they get..and its probably money that was supposed to pay someones mortgagae...but they stupidly lost it to the Casino..hoping to get rich...the only ones getting rich are the select few tribal members!! I thought Indians were supposed to be so grounded and earthbound...why the need for those ugly mansions and so much cash??...I sure do see an awful lot of trashy houses and nasty conditions on some of the reservations....but I suppose they are waiting for the Government to clean that up for them...even after all the money they give themselves...they should be ashamed...!

Thank you to San Manuel on behalf of those of us who have "tasted" hunger.

Keep up the good work.

In discussing San Manuel members, or Ms. Valbuena specifically, IF they are making $130,000 per month, then, she pays over $400,000a year in Federal taxes. This allows a lot of people in this country free health care, WIC, and other government handouts.

And, she could easily buy a Rolex with the $5K I mentioned, but she DIDN"T. And that's the point. She is separate from San Manuel in what she donates.

Take Pechanga for instance. Do you REALLY think Ray Sr, his sisters, Burbee are giving much to charity?

The look of housing is in the eye of the beholder. With San Manuel, they were forced on the the most barren land on this side of the hill, I've seen a lot uglier homes in Diamond Bar and Glendale.....

Can I ask you guys a question??...who "forced" these people to live in the most barren land?...do you think the african-americans were handed everything after slavery?...why not do what many immigrants did when they got here....WORK....and establish yourself...why wait for Government hand-outs?..were these people told that they could ONLY live on this land?...and even if there is poverty..it doesn't have to look like it does at these reservations..cars up on jacks...abandoned cars...plastic for windows..terrible trash..is there no pride??..you can at least be clean...why does everyoe owe only the Indians?..and it is well stated on this site about how much drug abuse there is on the res....all this new-found money could go a long way in cleaning up this blight and putting in some affordable housing for the reservation population..instead of huge amounts of money going to the chosen few...

Looks like you have some studying to do.

Look up the San Manuel site for starters.

Geez, who complains about others giving when they probably don't give much themselves?

You are missing my point...most of the tribes are getting bad publicity right now..so San Manuel announces that they are giving $100thousand to the food bank...looks great on paper...but probably just for some good publicity for a change..and it was still less than they pay themselves EACH month each member....so $100,000 is supposed to help thousands of people, yet they need that amount and more each month just for 1 member?..and there is still a huge amount of things to clean up on the reservations and I think...and its just my opinion..that until all of the crime and poverty is cleaned up on the reservations..the per capita should go for that...because when the tribes were trying to get our
votes for these Casinos....all we heard was how the would be so self sufficient...and some of these tribes are so busy crushing their own to get more ...that it is really a shame....does San Manuel come to the aid of the kicked out Pechanga members?...or Valley View??....this is all going to fly right back into the faces of the tribes...people are going to get sick of losing and seeing how much certain members are getting and seeing the State tax exemption and law breaking and try and stop these Casinos....or try and even the playing field with Statewide gambling...and the next time..it will go through...and the tribes won't have the monopoly that they now have.
and besides...most people that are truley charitable..don't announce it to the press...they don't need congratulations !

I think it is wonderful that they are helping those in need. I don't care if it isn't that big of a percentage of there intake, nor do I care if its for good publicity. The fact that it will help others out who are in need is the important thing.

Ive seen the same thing off reservations so why does it matter how you keep your property?

Not every one who lives off a rez. is finacially equal. People who assume that Indians who live on rez are all finacially equal are just ignorant.

Can I ask you guys a question??...who "forced" these people to live in the most barren land?...

White people who wanted all the other land. Settlers, who made extended families corral together on reserves. The same families who lived off the land and surrounding areas about the last 10,000 yrs.

I don't understand why all of you talk so much trash about San Manuel and their tribal members because you're sitting at home wishing you were fortunate enough to receive what they do. Don't bash people over sheer jealousy....have you done your homework and seen why exactly they deserve every penny?! Please do yourselves a favor and hate on someone else
