Sad news yesterday that Manuel Rios Sr., a descendant of Petra Tosobol and who rightfully belonged at Pechanga has died.

We received this notification via Facebook:

Great Warrior Manuel Rios Sr was sent to the Great Spirit. His life was of Civil Rights for his Pechanga family of eight generations Tosabol descendents.  He was outspoken to Mark Macarro for taking family land,  identity, heritage yet 15 years of his life has gone on deaf ears.

TO MACCARO ,Washington ,Indian affairs, BIA, Congress I Nancy Rios out of respect to his memory am more determined to fight Pechanga for his inheritance his Mother passed down to him.  Let this be your only thought tribal family, I will help create a civil rights movement modern day natives have not seen in light of Day.  Tribes from all over America will know Manuel Rios Sr and his story will go in the history books as one of the Original Pechanga descendents given land that you stole he is a tribal member of Pechanga and Always has been.

Mr. Rios could trace his Pechanga lineage back to 1784 with little difficulty.  As his son told us in 2009:

We start back to 1784 with my 5th great grandmother her name was Andrea Parable Tosbol. Then came Petra Tosbol Thujillo. then came Ysabel Munoa Thujillo then came Camill munoa Aguirre then came Ysabel Aguirre Rios. There are three familys that came from Camilla Munoa Aguirre they are as follows Rios family, Aguirre family , Ursua family .

The MUNOA family are their relations, they are in the tribe and have done little or NOTHING to help their family members secure their rightful place in the tribe.

We have posted the story of the RIOS/Tosobol Moratorium People family many times:

The Rios/Tosobal Family has ties to the Pechanga tribe, from his mother back to his great-great-great-grandmother, born in 1811. (That’s when Abe Lincoln was 2 years old!)

So, when his mother died in 1978 and left him a piece of reservation land, Manuel Rios Jr. began trying to make arrangements to bring water and electricity to the plot so he could set up a home there. 30 years later, he has yet to get tribal approval to do anything with the land.Tribal officials had told him he and his family are not on the rolls, he said, and they won’t get considered for membership until a moratorium on new enrollments is lifted now extended past 2010. His family members, who number more than 100, have stacks of documents that they say they submitted to the enrollment committee 15 years ago.

We continue our fight for justice for those disenrolled and those in the moratorium, over 100 Tosobol descendants and including family of Pechanga Chairman Mark Macarro.  Please join us by sharing this and other stories with your twitter feed and Facebook pages.

Why do the majority of Pechanga "Indians" have Spanish/Mexican surnames? Is it because of the mission system of Manifest Destiny and their descendents were once someone's property, like slaves?

ALL IS ALL Forever. Before, Now, and after the travel here and now. Disrespecting others is not the answer. Sharing the truth always and forever is. No one is more accepted before or after our travels. We are here for a reason. Trying to justify lies and misinformation being broadcast is a unfortunate event. Disrespecting elders who have been here before us is unacceptable now and forever. The truth is the truth and the lies are the lies. Tell whatever is important to you, and carry it with you forever. We are ALL here for a reason.

Yes we were the property of the missionaries back it the 1700s. My condolences to the Rios family. I spoke with Manuel Rios Sr. a few years back. He expressed his sadness about the lack of family unity and the bad manners of the tribe. His understanding and wisdom can not be replaced. This happened to us when our grandfather left us.

In the interest of accuracy, Manifest Destiny was an American invention; it was a belief that America was destined to expand from the east coast to the west coast and to control all the lands between.

The Mission system was a Spanish invention; under the guise of bringing the Catholic faith to the heathen natives, the Missions were used to gain control over the land and the natives.

The natives were made slaves, and their labor was exploited to benefit the Church and the Spanish Empire, while their lands were transformed to agrarian uses.

The multiplicity of Indian languages and difficulty of pronouncing Indian names was overcome by giving them Christian first names and latin-izing their family names. This is why many California Indians, especially those that were converted to Catholicism, have Spanish, or Spanish sounding last names.

Very true, Mr. Reinstatement. We are the product of two types of tyranny. Imperialism and Christendom, yet both were ruled by the Papal Edict that all savage3s, us, were either to be subjugated or killed. This holy command by the3 pope for the
Spanish and church of England gave authority to kill indiscriminately.

Johnny come to lately. What does that even mean? How could he be a Johnny come lately? Please explain that. When he has his entire life been Luiseno. His mother, grandmother greatgrandmother... I can give you names. Can Marc? Can you? He never wanted to be a "casino Indian" he just wanted to live on his land.

What I understand is the Tosabols enrollment papers were in before the moratorium. Now Bobby Lemirs sister was enrolled after the moratorium because she had the deciding vote to disenroll the Hunters.

Yep that's the truth.

I heard the moratorium was extended another 3 years. Could anyone tell me why?
