NCAI TRIBAL NATIONS POLICY SUMMIT: Another Major Event that IGNORES the ABUSES of NATIVE AMERICANS, BY Native Americans

Another year, and the same old story coming from the National Council of American Indians:  DEAFENING SILENCE ON DISENROLLMENT

The NCAI agenda is here with four and a half days of meetings and events and NOT a MINUTE to discuss the civil and human rights abuses OF Native Americans, By tribes such as Nooksack, Pechanga, Pala, Redding Rancheria.  This make a grand total of ZERO minutes the past decade. 

They couldn't even make time to CELEBRATE those tribes that have returned members to their rightful status, like Enterprise Rancheria and Graton, or acknowledge the Cherokee Freedmen gaining their rightful status.

What does it take for the epidemic to reach the heights of this political organization?
 
ELDER ABUSE?   Nope, silence
CHILD ABUSE?    Nuh, uh, quiet
Apartheid?             Never speak of it
Voting abuses?     Shh, family secret
Fraud?                   Not our business

But by all means, let's give a FAKE, undocumented white woman to speak and save the Indian.

Elizabeth Warren Brings her High Cheekbones to the National Congress of American Indians ADMITS she is NOT a Tribal Member

SURPRISE! ELIZABETH WARREN ADMITS SHE IS NOT an enrolled tribal member.

Elizabeth Warren was conspicuously not scheduled to speak at the NCAI Tribal Nations Policy Summit in Washington, DC, despite being the only Senator to claim a Native American heritage.

Warren made a surprise appearance on Wednesday, addressing allegations that she has lied about her ancestry. Cherokee genealogists including our friend Twila Barnes have traced Warren’s family tree and found no evidence to support her claim of minority status.

Warren has shifted her stance, since being slammed numerous times this year, by Cherokees.  She ADMITS she is NOT enrolled, nor her family members on any rolls.

"I get why some people think there’s hay to be made here. You won’t find my family members on any rolls, and I’m not enrolled in a tribe.”
“And I want to make something clear. I respect that distinction. I understand that tribal membership is determined by tribes — and only by tribes.

Warren went on to address the problems in the Native American community and promised that she would share their stories in Congress.

Better LATE than NEVER, right?  One writer has it right:

 If she didn’t care much about Native American issues before, she does now. A lot. And will until November 3, 2020.

Annual Stop Disenrollment Visual Campaign Slated for February 8, 2018

On Thursday, February 8, 2018, the online visual advocacy movement, Stop Disenrollment, will launch once again.

Stop Disenrollment went viral on February 8, 2016, and again last year on February 8, catching international media attention. The movement is poised to raise social consciousness again this year. Prominent Native Americans like author Sherman Alexie, former U.S. Vice Presidential candidate Winona LaDuke, rapper-actor-entrepreneur Litefoot, film director Chris Eyre, fashion designer Bethany Yellowtail, and Olympic Gold Medalist Billy Mills headlined the 2016 and 2017-campaigns.

The visual advocacy movement is a grassroots Native reaction to tribal politicians who have, over the last decade, exiled thousands of their own relatives from tribal communities and homelands, through a colonially inspired practice called “disenrollment.”

Yes, the PRESSURE on the Cleveland Indians to remove their racist caricature CHIEF WAHOO has yielded results:

The enlightened social mores of the mid-to-late 20th century have arrived with a vengeance in Cleveland, the New York Times reports:

The Cleveland Indians will stop using the Chief Wahoo logo on their uniforms beginning in 2019, according to Major League Baseball, which said the popular symbol was no longer appropriate for use on the field.

Trump Administration Keeping EYE on the CORRUPTION at NOOKSACK and BOB KELLY

The Trump administration is continuing to assert oversight in a long-running and highly-charged leadership and disenrollment dispute within the Nooksack Tribe.

Some within the tribe expressed optimism after the Bureau of Indian Affairs reached an agreement last fall with Bob Kelly, the disputed chairman on the reservation in Washington state. The deal called for a new council election, one in which hundreds of people who were being kicked off the rolls were able to participate.

But hopes have been dashed since the December vote. The BIA has called more than 100 ballots into question, a number so large that it could sway the outcome of the results for the four council seats that were on the general election ballot.

"Our immediate reaction to the general election results was that the total vote count appeared to be about 100 votes too high," said Michelle Roberts, a tribal citizen who serves as a spokesperson for those who have clashed with Kelly and his faction. "It now appears to have been 126 votes too high. We have no doubt the election was a sham."

Separately, a former council member who opposed the disenrollment purge, has filed two lawsuits in connection with the struggle. In one, Carmen Tageant alleges she was "assaulted and battered" by the tribe's police chief earlier this month when she attempted to file as a candidate in an upcoming election. In the second, she says an unnamed individual has engaged in a "cyber-harassment" campaign against her by posting personal and threatening information about her online.

The lawsuit alleges the individual behind a Facebook profile is connected to Kelly and his faction. Some on the social media site believe the person controlling the "Keith Williams" account is actually Kelly, though there is little direct proof of that at this point.

According to the complaint, Tageant has "suffered severe emotional trauma. Ms. Tageant has been unable to sleep. Instead of focusing on her professional career, Ms. Tageant has had to worry about her safety and the safety of her seven children. She has had to work hard to repair her professional and personal reputations."

Darrell Issa has never stood up for the civil and human rights of Native Americans who have been harmed by his rich tribal friends.   Today, he announced his retirement.   Sadly, it's NOT immediate.

We wrote about him here in 2008   Darrell Issa Screws Temecula Indians..  and other times throughout the disenrollment decade. He supported and sponsored a land grab by Mark Macarro's council which became a golf course built over the graves of our ancestors.

Before the results are even certified, we now see what the NOOKSACK plans are:

Nooksack tribal chairman Bob Kelly said he plans to start a new round of disenrollment hearings this week following an election that seemed to favor incumbents but was clouded by allegations of fraud.

Kelly and his council allies have been trying for five years to kick roughly 300 members out of the tribe, launching a divisive dispute about lineage and power that has gotten national attention, sparked federal intervention and raised broader questions about tribal disenrollment nationwide.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke and Mark Macarro, Chairman of the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Mission Indians today signed the Pechanga Water Rights Settlement Agreement (Agreement), formally executing a Congressionally authorized pact that protects the Pechanga Band’s access to groundwater in the region and provides the tribe with more than $30 million in federal funding to pay for water storage projects.

“I’ve been doing the math and it just doesn’t make sense to me,” said Robert Doucette, who ran on a slate promising change in a tribe riven by bitter division over a long-running disenrollment effort.

Seattle attorney Gabriel Galanda, who has long represented those facing disenrollment, attracting national attention, has now taken on Doucette and other members of his slate as clients. On Monday, Galanda filed a challenge to the results with the tribal election board. He said he also plans to lodge a protest with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA).

OP:  The BIA doesn't care.  They just wanted ANY ELECTION as COVER...

Kelly and aligned council members sought to kick out roughly 300 members in a dispute over lineage and power, the tribal government stopped tending to other matters and resorted to unusual means to enforce its will. It fired a judge for opinions it didn’t like, disbarred Galanda and called off an election that was supposed to be held in 2015.

With some Nooksack council members holding onto power after their terms had expired, the feds deemed the tribal government illegitimate and denied the tribe millions in federal funds. The election was a prerequisite for getting that funding back.
