UPDATE: NCAI Elects Convicted Felon From Redding Rancheria As Pacific Region VP

Yes, in another example of "jumping the shark", the National Congress of American Indians has elected Jack Potter, current chairman of Redding Rancheria, a well known disenrollment tribe as their VP for the Pacific Region.

Is it any wonder there is NO concern for American Indians that have been stripped of their citizenship on this week's agenda?   Heck no, wouldn't want to embarrass some tribes by pointing out their civil and human rights violations, right?  Not when there's still the Redskin nickname to worry about.

Rehabilitation is a good thing. Congratulations on Mr. Potter's becoming a Vice President.  Next thing you know, the NCAI will have Mark Macarro introduce Brian Cladoosby for re-election..  what? They did?

UPDATE: My good friend and respected elder from Chukchansi, Cathy Cory has a MUCH different, and reasoned take on the issue in the comment section:

So much hatred...in both directions...it hurts my heart. Blessings to Mr. Potter for turning his life around--people can, and do, change every day. I'm certain that his journey has provided much inspiration for young people who have perhaps started down a destructive paths, and other adults who need hope to follow the good Red Road. That said, Jack Potter has felt the destructive forces that tear our Indian People apart, and has survived. He now is in a position, not only with NCAI but with his own tribe, to truly help other Indian People and make things right. Many know the story of the Foremans from Redding Rancheria, the role of Bob Foreman in re-establishing the tribe, his love for his People, and for others as evidenced not only with his work as Chairman of Redding Rancheria but on the Rural Indian Health Board as well. Do the right thing, Mr. Potter. Bring the Foreman family home to Redding Rancheria--where they belong! Stand up in your position with NCAI as a voice for those disenrolled from their tribes, those who are nonenrolled, and tribes such as the Winnemem Wintu who are attempting to obtain the Federal Recognition they seek and deserve. Be the leader that your journey to a destructive place, and back, has been planned by Creator for a reason. Do what is right, and begin by bringing the family of Bob Foreman home to Redding Rancheria where they belong. A ho'!

Typical. Is Brian Cladoosby even Native? He look like a white man? What does the National Congress of American Indians do, besides waste the federal government's dollars for their "look at me" meetings?

I wouldnt be so quick to judge a book by its cover, genetics can act very strangely when selection of a dominant gene over the other. Plus, I know alot of people who are of Filipino descent and Mexican blood descent who masquerade as full bloods because of their darker skin tones. But, with that said, I agree with you on the lack of responsibilty of the NCAI to do right by native people. They seem to focus only on show boating and protecting rights of the powerful, not concerned an ounce about the meek and powerless who are being trampled on by Casino Indians.

What a disgrace it's so sad we did not get justice for my father in law Bob Foreman Sr before he passed away he is the one that should get this honor not a convicted felon!

You guys are a real piece of work talking shit, this man is honorable in every sense, the community is proud of who he has become after enduring things you have no understanding of, he stands for every bit of history this 'America' has massacred by keeping traditions alive, from shit talking, uneducated, Anglo-ingorant-miley-cyrus-loving sick individuals, and he got successful by ignoring all criticism and negative circumstances and it's harsh people just like you all talking shit,

Unknown said...

Shame on all of you. Judging someone on their past. It takes a shallow person to dig things like this up. Jack was raised by our grandparents. He knows more Tribal Traditions and Tribal law then a lot of tribal people. He has helped many people
I know this personally. A lot of our most dedicated leaders did not have an easy life....they were not born with a silver spoon in their mouth. He was Native before the casino came along and will be when they are gone. He knows who he is ...knows where he comes from..and can prove it. Shame on you for trying to make someone look bad...look in the mirror ... True Natives do not do this!!

It sounds like people are jealous of the achievements he has made. If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. Jack has come along way. So stop slandering him and let his family enjoy this moment.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like he has turned his negative into a positive, congrats for him and keep on keeping on. It is hard because we see so many Natives who have committed and still are committing major crimes even towards their own families and then they are put in positions of authority which is totally wrong, so please forgive any jumping to conclusions. Good for you all to be sticking up for him. Everyone deserves a second chance and people do change, I have seen it happen.

Who in the hell are you people to judge anybody for mistakes made in the past? I suppose all of you live in glass houses. This man Jack Potter is a honorable, loving, caring, kind human being & it sickens me to hear his name being smeared by some urban bloggers who only have the balls to talk shit behind a keyboard! This man has done nothing but good for our Indian people unlike tearing them down with hateful words...

If hes so Honorable let him wave the sovereignty on the disenrolled issue and settle it before the dept of interior.

Anonymous said...

Why would we wave our sovereignty to a government that tried to destroy us. Disenrollment is wrong when it's done over greed while others where done because they could not provide proof. All tribes have enrollment procedures. Either blood quantum or decendants, if you don't meet the qualifications it's not the tribes fault my blue eyed blood relatives.

As I said earlier, it is not.right to judge a book by its cover. I dont know anything personally about this fellow. It sounds like some of you really care and love him and it isnt nice to have to come on this or any blog to see your loved one under attack. My point is still the same, NCAI does nothing to support the disenrollment issue and I think the owner of the blog knows this and feels this too. Its not right to represent this fellow as an evil doer without knowing his background and its embarrasing how sophomoric some of these comments are, I wish him the best and hope he can be a person who can make a real difference in their position rather than go the normal routine so many other native people in positions of prominence have taken and just be in that position only for their glory and personal ego. DISENROLLMENT IS WRONG, PERSECUTING A MAN WITHOUT KNOWING THE WALK HE HAS TAKEN IN LIFE IS ALSO WRONG, BUT ALLOWING EVIL LEADERS TO THRIVE AND ABUSE THEIR AUTHORITY, THEN LOOK THE OTHER WAY (WINK, WINK NCAI) IS THE ULTIMATE WRONG!

The NCAI does not address any real concerning issues during their "look at me, look at me!!" conferences. I wonder how much alcohol sales increased this week in San Diego? And what was the honorable felon in this blog convicted of? That was never answered.

His Grandmother Mildred Rhodes would have never of let him or anyone in her family disgrace his native heritage the way he did by standing by and not saying a word or help stop the disenrolled ment of the my Husbands family the Foremans! This is what happens when your out in public your past comes back to haunt you no matter how much you have changed! It's all about the money greed! Shame shame on him and the rest of the Redding Rancheria for what they have done! I watched my father in law Bob Foreman Sr die of a broken heart for what they did to him and the rest of the family, he is the real deal if it wasn't for Bob there would be no health care clinic or casino! We will never give up the our families fight for justice and civil rights!

Disenrollment is NOT wrong when NON-TRIBAL people infiltrated a tribe that they do not belong and they do it for MONITARY GAIN....and reading this blog all I see is that "IN-LAWS" of disenrolled people are the ones that have a problem with the issue, as a native I believe it's NONE of their business, this is a native matter, or is it that possibly their "cash cows" have dried up??
Mr. Potter is very well respected among other tribes, he always has a smile and a helping hand, so a big CONGRATS, to you Mr. Jack Potter!!

You are wrong bibsgirl...there are two families that were proven tribal that have been disenrolled from Pechaga and Pala...why aren't they getting any help from these committees? Instead the courts will decide. Save your harsh words for the crooked EC of these tribes that stand by and let this happen so they can increase their own per caps.

Police say suspect wanted to rob bank

Redding police arrested a man Wednesday who they suspect had hatched a plan to rob a bank before changing his mind and leaving the building.

Richard Abbie Wilson III, 19, of Redding, was arrested and booked on suspicion of trying to rob a bank, police said.

Authorities said they suspect Wilson was planning to hold up the bank with a pellet gun he allegedly had underneath a sweatshirt.

Officers said a man dressed in dark clothing, black gloves, a black cap and sunglasses entered the North Valley Bank on Westside Road around noon.

They said the suspect stood around for a long time, leaving only after an employee announced 911 was being called.

Officers said they found Wilson, dressed in dark clothing, walking out of a nearby business and he was "acting nervous."

Officer Rob Peterson found a handgun in Wilson's waistband hidden by a black sweatshirt, officers said.

Officers said the gun was a pellet gun that resembled a pistol.

Authorities said they arrested Wilson on suspicion of attempted robbery and burglary.

After the officers brought Wilson to the police department, they said he confessed that he had planned to rob the bank with the pellet gun.

He planned to present a teller with a note demanding cash and using the gun as a threat, according to police.

Officers said Wilson is being held at Shasta County jail, with bail set at $50,000.

All remaining Redding Rancheria should have Jack Potter as an inspiration. Look what he has accomplished:

He helped bring shame and scorn to the Rancheria.
He helped eliminate the first tribal chairman's family.
He played a part in have the remains of an elder desecrated.
He continues to run the tribe, without bringing justice back.
He hasn't atoned for his sins, just allowed the passage of time to cloud the story.

Congratulations

Nazi has the same concept, Native Americans represent each other, as choSen and honored and especially coming out of a dark place in their lives, because it doesn't take the mouth of arrogant criticism to hold any duty of respectable decision making and support from native people, it takes the voice of a tribal member very well prepared and dignified and CAPABLE to be in a position to keep us all together, without any shit talking comments from the opposed party , I can't imagine it being someone that is quick to kick their own people down, on a lame ass post at that!! I have no quarrel with Mr. Potter. If he has turned his life around then he has done something great. If not well that is between him and God. We will all be judged for our words and actins. We Apis have also proven we are who we say we are. Not many of us post on this site, for we do not actively strive to claim our heritage publicly, for we do not need to. We have our history that is untarnished by the corruption of Pechanga. We have money, but we honestly work for it we do not need to steal it from others. What Pechanga did was wrong and they will answer for it, but to be a follower of Jesus I am to forgive and spread the word of God to those who will listen. This can not be done when there is hate in my heart. If Jesus can forgive all of my sins then he can forgive this mans, he can forgive those who control these corrupt tribes, and even you if you believe that you need forgivingness. He just wants you to repent and to love him. Again how can you do this with hatred in your heart.

I see a lot of casino Indians angry about this article.
Well no matter what tribe you are from I'm positive disenrollment is not your ancestral way. It's not the Indian way. And like you, I'm sure many germans thought "well I'm not jewish, it doesn't concern me". Look how Hitler turned out.
Taking what is not yours to take, disrespecting the ancestors, ALL the ancestors, no matter which family they're from.
Kristina Kingsley said it right. Native hating Native. So I'm assuming she's praying the most to help the disenrolled, right?

They are the ones that have been harmed by the tribe. Loss of community, jobs, education, health care. They are still Natives, they still live on the reservation, they have deep rooted Native blood.

Oh, the Million Dollar question $$!!!. First off , I did have the privelage to work at the three main components of a tribe's industry which includes tribal office, health clinic, and casino for I'd say, little over 6 years. What I did learn was that in a small community, people get rather informative and angry, and when money talks, it fuels the fire, where rumors and assumptions are born. Nonetheless, family feuds or not, policies are brought up, temperature rises, and the decisions are ultimately presented before the membership. And here's my point, and every tribe is very similar to this, if My Jack or any other committee representative had any proposed plan of actions of any type, there are policies, motions, laws, etc that the MEMBERSHIP VOTED ON, to be a...Guide to pass those decisions. I also want to mention as a reminder, that the vote of My Jack counts as one (1). One of thousands and thousands of tribal members whom have a right to also vote on all tribal business. The OPINION of My Jack's plan of enrollment? That will only be of my faith that he has been prepared by ole time and experience with the tribal nation to represent the memberships decision. MY JACK'S actual plan on the disenrollment of thousands of family members? I do not know that, but I know yourself and the membership will be notified in due course.

Unknown said...

Again, I cannot imagine, the harship any family had to endure with the process of disenrollment , it's pain to even say the word and choices to bear that follow. I am confident that any disenrolled families will find clarity in the midst of confusion.

Anonymous said...

More double talk Kristina. You need to get some "clarity". In tribes like Paks, it is the chairman calling the shots ...voting isn't even followed by the rules. You don't really know what the vote count was. Don't assume all tribes are the same. Who benefitted from the huge Pechanga disenrollment?...the remaining tribe members by a large per cap, increase. It's essy for you to say what you are saying...you weren't proven a member and still disenrolled.

If you believe it's ok to not honor ALL ancestors, ignore Ricks blog. If you believe sharing the Truth and honoring ALL Ancestors come back more often. My Ancestors put up with a lot of uncomfortable actions by missions, and settlers. I am here today and I thank ALL Ancestors for creating our story.
