Bank of America is the “exclusive sponsor” of the Washington Redskins.  Bank of America is also an  exclusive lender–in fact, the leading lender–the $28 billion Indian gaming industry.

Bank of America has paid millions of dollars to Dan Snyder to serve as the “Official Bank of the Washington Redskins.”  Bank of America has received many millions more from Indian Country in gaming deals. Bank of America is so very content to have it both ways, remaining on the sidelines of the Redskins mascot debate

Indian Country now balks at Nike and FedEx‘s Redskins sponsorships. But the hundreds of tribes that bank with Bank of America, and that collectively tout billions of dollars in purchasing power, speak little of Bank of America’s own use of the Redskins mascot or unholy alliance with Dan Snyder.

Simply put, cash is king. Indeed, while Indian country scorns Snyder’s Original Americans Foundation and rejects his blood money, tribes accept donations from Nike’s N7 Fund and tribal casinos continue to do mega business with BofA. It’s all shades of grey, or green.

This status quo will prevail until the money fleets from Bank of America, Nike and FedEx, the NFL, and in turn Dan Snyder.

Maybe Indian gaming money will be the first to go. Maybe not. But only when the money goes, will the name change.

A coalition of blacks, non-voting delegates, and some of the more screwball white Democrats, are sponsoring a bill to shake down the Cherokee Nation.
The bill would require the Cherokee Nation to accept blacks who allege their ancestors were once owned by Cherokee slaveholders. Calling themselves “The Cherokee Freedment”, blacks demanding membership in the tribe would also be entitled to governmnent benefits and casino profits. The Cherokee Nation voted last year not to accept blacks as tribe members.
The bill in congress would suspend entitlements to the Cherokee Nation and freeze casino operations until the so called “Cherokee Freedmen” get a piece of the action for themselves. The bill also contains vague language allowing the “Cherokee Freedmen” to sue for alleged damages, meaning that these opportunists are seeking a very large piece of the pie indeed.
The Treaty of 1866 came about during Reconstruction. The Federal government declared that the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole, and Creek tribes had violated their treaties because of alliances with the Confederate Government. The government nullified all treaties with these tribes. Since the Cherokee owned significant numbers of Negro slaves, when the Federal government wrote the new treaty it declared the Negroes free and citizens in the Cherokee Nation. The negroes were listed as Cherokee citizens on all Indian cenuses.
In 2007, the Cherokee Nation voted by a 77% majority in favor of a referendum that denied freed slaves were ever Cherokee citizens, and any blacks who had falsely claimed Cherokee membership were expelled. The heart of the controversy is money and jealousy. Blacks had been joining because of lucrative Federal entitlements and casino profits.

Members of the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians of California were meeting on Sunday to consider tribal enrollment criteria as part of an ongoing controversy over attempts to trim 400, whom some say can't show Pechanga lineage, from the tribal rolls.
Chairman Mark Macarro told The Riverside Press-Enterprise in a statement that the matter was a private matter. "What goes on internally at Pechanga is of no business to the white man, enrollment included," the paper quoted him as saying. OP: If that's true, then why do they have a white man, Murphy on their Tribal Council. He has NO Indian blood.

But according to the paper, he later called to clarify. "I think what I wrote sounds or looks a little racist, actually, and I'm even surprised by it," he said. He substituted a statement that eliminated the reference to "the white man." Wasn't the cow out of the barn already.

The tribe owns a casino. Each adult member currently receives a $10,000 per capita payment per month, according to the paper. OP: This was incorrect, the per capita was $15,000 at this time.
