CALIFORNIA BANS REDSKINS AS TEAM NAME: Thank YOU Governor Brown, Now, Let Move on to SERIOUS MATTERS

Amid national debate about the use of a term many critics call outdated and offensive, Gov. Jerry Brown on Sunday signed legislation banning the use of “Redskins” as a school mascot or team name.

While offensive to some, it seems too coincidental that politicians focus with laser intensity on this issue, while blithely ignoring the real issues in Indian Country:  Tribal abuses of their own people. This year marks a full decade of civil rights violations primarily by Native American tribes with casinos.

Today, we urge you to be more serious about issues that matter in Indian County. Those issues include:

Denial of due process: Tribal leaders have routinely committed acts to deny Indian individuals due process; equal protection of tribal, state, and federal laws; property interest rights; and voting rights. These actions have been carried out in gross violation of tribal and federal laws, such as the Indian Civil Rights Act of 1968, which were specifically enacted to guarantee and protect the rights of the individual Indian.

Disenrollment, the action of stripping tribal citizenship and federal recognition as native americans by councils for questioning illegal or self serving actions of corrupt tribal leaders who hold on to their positions at all costs to hide their crimes or to increase the amounts of per capita, or perhaps to settle an old score, has been growing at a level that should draw your attention much more than an offensive nickname.   Tribes such as Chukchansi, near Fresno, CA with 60% of their tribe disenrolled, and the Pala Band of Luiseno Indians, in San Diego County, with more that 15% of the tribe terminated are just two of the more prominent tribes to have removed large numbers of people.  20% of citizens terminated would represent 7 million Californians.

Apartheid on our reservations in the 21st century.  And it is native american tribes that are practicing this disgraceful action.  The Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians in Temecula, led my Chairman Mark Macarro, known to many of you does not allow allottees of the reservation that have been disenrolled to use any reservation facilities, such as playgrounds, park or restrooms and water fountains.  If they are caught, they could be banished from their homes and land, in the family since 1895.  Allottees have no right to vote on issues pertaining to them, and recently attempted to steal water rights from allottees in a bill that seemed to be written by chairman Macarro's wife, lobbyist Holly Cook Macarro of IETAN.

But the Democratic governor vetoed legislation that would prohibit naming public buildings and roads in California after Confederate leaders.

The “Redskins” bill’s enactment comes 11 years after then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed similar legislation. Brown signed the bill without comment.

Assembly Bill 30, by Assemblyman Luis Alejo, D-Watsonville, will affect only four high schools in California – in Calaveras, Merced and Madera counties. The bill will let schools keep uniforms bearing the name if they are purchased before 2017 as long as the school selects a new team name, mascot or nickname.

In his 2004 veto of similar legislation, said local school boards should retain “general control over all aspects of their interscholastic policies.” Opponents of this year’s bill made a similar argument.

Brown himself appealed to local control in vetoing Senate Bill 539, the Confederate bill. He said in a veto message that the issue is “quintessentially for local decision makers.”

“Local governments are laboratories of democracy which, under most circumstances, are quite capable of deciding for themselves which of their buildings and parks should be named, and after whom.”

That reasoning did not satisfy the bill’s author, Sen. Steve Glazer, D-Orinda, who helped guide Brown’s 2010 run for the governorship. He took to Twitter to criticize his former boss, calling the veto a “hollow defense of unacceptable status quo.”

This is just a ploy to avert attention on the disenrollment issue and to make the Governor look like he really cares about the Native Americans, while his pockets are full from Corrupt Tribal Leaders. After all why should he care what happens to some ""idiot violent natives" as told to him by the leaders". We are just trouble makers and he is just helping to let them cleanse their tribal rolls. FYI Governor, we are citizens too and deserve our chance to prove our right. You have helped to let these leaders destroy our lives, our sense of belonging, and strip us of our rightful heritage that has always been a part of our lives. This is not something that we just decided to be, this is something that we were born into, our history, our present, and our future has always been being Indian and part of our tribes. Only others who go through the same plight can really understand, but please pay attention to the heinous crimes these evil leaders are doing to their own people, and help to end these crimes instead of banning a word. Hope you feel better about yourself.

do you hear yourself? everyone that posts to this blog has the same mentality. if you don't agree with me (because only I matter) or my thoughts you are corrupt, paid off or just criminals. you assume everyone in the world is against you. at this point you should assume that only god is on your side because everyone else can be bought. is that what you feel and want others to believe about native americans because that is the picture you paint.

I read the earlier comment and believe that if you were offered $10M for being native American you would say no I deserve $20M.

If you want to talk about plight, look at what the jews endured in ww2. At least you were not gassed.

To the above post..because that's what it feels like being native. That everyone is against you. You complain and try to fight your corrupt, theiving leaders to the government,BIA and they won't help you and tell you to refer to your tribal leaders when they are the ones your reporting about. You don't know it till you experience it.

So what is the real issue? Is it the weakness of man to succumb to corruption? Is it something else, could it be the failing of man because of sin? Greed, pride, and covertness is not new. I do not expect anyone to fight my battles, so I don't expect others to, not do I get upset because they don't.

At least we can express our feelings and share the truth. We are all here because the Creator wanted it this way. We can all allow lies and misinformation to be broadcast, and our ancestors to be disrespected or we can share the truth and show that disrespectful acts will not be allowed. Life is one big show and we can pick whatever seat we want to be on. At least we still have the right to share our feelings and respect our elders the way I want to be respected. I choose to share the TRUTH!

For factions to think disenrollment is the settling of our ways and not following custom and tradition is sad. We could say we made a mistake and live with it, and not enroll more for that reason. To not honor what the creator planted is very disrespectful.

@October 12 6:04 PM It is obvious that you do not read the comments with the right attitude, in no way do we say we want more of anything and that if you disagree with us you are wrong. We just want our due process, that is all, if after that we are proved wrong then so be it, but we are not even given the chance. How dare you put your thoughts on us. What if you were told by four leaders that you must leave the country because you are no longer a citizen, pick up everything and leave with no where to go, knowing no one to go to, you are not American (even though you know you are), your family has lied to you. No voting rights, no health care, no burial rights, nothing and anything that you have accumulated is going to be taken from you. Hmm wouldn't you fight this? Wouldn't you start doing some research on how this happened? We have done extensive research, gone to the archives for hours upon hours, researched companies and people and found weird relationships and millions of dollars unaccounted for. We have seen links over and over between certain government factions and certain tribal leaders and others that they know. It seems like the line of corruption is endless, and every time we think we have found someone honest we find another link to corruption. It is scary.
As far as our plight, I do agree that the Jews suffered greatly, they chose to be Jewish, we are born this way. In the 1850's during the California Gold Rush, a price of $50 was put on Native Americans' Heads, because they thought the Indians were going to take their precious gold. There were over 100,000 Indians in California and when it was all said and done there were only 25,000 Indians left, they were tortured, raped, murdered, and scalped, so you tell me is that not a plight?

2:55pm. i understand your point. you were born indian much like the jews were born jews. The jews were told by just one person that they must die. not even given a chance to flee. so how dare you compare. Let's talk death to death. the jews lost 2,000,000. you lost 75,000. you were resettled, the jews were burned alive. the price on the head of a jew was $0. The jews pulled them selves up by the boot straps and made a life. the Indians chose to squabble over the lost casino earnings.

Read some history and you will see who suffered more. you should be happy that you got the money you did before you were disenrolled.

I see on this blog a group of people who will never be happy unless everything goes their way. it is always a huge conspiracy against you.

@ 6:24 PM, You are funny, you brought up the Jews, not us. We are not comparing, we are not crying about not having money, it is not that, that has been gone for a while and yet here we are still. It is about our rights, our heritage, our way of life, our traditions, our families. We were happy before the Casinos and things were much better family wise. And if you are not native then you have no right to judge the situation. We are fighting for what we think is right and what we know is right and what we have proven to be right. That is all. You do not have to come to this blog and read our comments, Go read some blog by the Jews and join their fight.

6:48pm.

Gladly won't come back to the "oh wow is me" blog. You quickly dismiss the Jews but just remember they now control much of what determines your fate. Feinstein and Dickstein to name just two. They also sit on the courts, etc.

You want some compassion, offer some.
