Pechanga's Layoffs aren't the WHOLE Story

Pechanga has announced layoffs of 400 team members from a total of 4700. What they didn't announce was that they have been letting people go for some time.

A Press Enterprise article from 11/24 has a quote from Mark Macarro that says that Pechanga "employs 5100 people." That means that with all the prosperity, employee ranks had already shed 400 spots before this announced layoffs.

No wonder the profits were big enough to give a per capita of $30,000 per month. Eliminate EMPLOYEES AND Tribal Members. It's not just an "internal matter" anymore is it? 800 employees GONE from Pechanga.

Good luck. We hope you still have a job. In the sad event that you do lose your job, please report back to us what the severance package offered is.

Just curious...why would you get a severance package?..aren't they just laid off?..or are they terminated?..most of the time when you get laid off..you just get unemployment..or doesn't Pechanga pay into it??..it is a State fund I think??..are they exempt from that as well??....man..they wouldn't even get unemployment??

Many companies that value their "team members" offer packages to them when they layoff personnel. Sometimes for the good of the employee, sometimes because it makes the company more attractive to work for. There is another thread that discusses severance. Laid off IS terminated.

I haven't heard an answer on unemployment, maybe Pechanga can answer that for us.

Severance packages also look good in the press. It makes the employer seem less the heartless entity they can sometimes be.

Has anybody heard yet if the layed-off "team members" were done by senority?....or if employees with many years of service were also getting laid off?...or is it full time employees with benefits that are getting the shaft in favor of part timers with less benefits?..any news???

Actually this is a mass firing under the lable of lay offs. People who are laid off must reapply for jobs at a later date.

O Pechanga stated "A Press Enterprise article from 11/24 has a quote from Mark Macarro that says that Pechanga "employs 5100 people." That means that with all the prosperity, employee ranks had already shed 400 spots before this announced layoffs.

This would make since at first glance, BUT you need to take into consideration that Mark is a notorious lair. I used to believe him when he spoke, but now I no longer believe ANYTHING he says (especially to the press).

someone i know was included in the layoffs... only after she refused to "resign her position".

severance pay was 1 week's pay plus 1 week for every year worked, only payable if a waiver was signed releasing pechanga from being sued.

she hasn't signed the paper yet, as she is contemplating the legality of denying an extension of the maternity leave for an 8 month pregnant employee, forcing her to return to work or quit. it wasn't until after she threatened to return to work that she was suddenly included in the layoffs the next day.

More layoffs are comming. In the fall, right before the holidays.

I'm sure the remaining members will get a quarterly bonus! What about the terminated employees? Most enrolled members make more a month than employees make all yr.

I remember when I asked the PDC why the tribe couldn't give accross the board raises for all employees.

The answer I got was Pechanga has a better benefits package than its competitors that makes up for less pay a lot of positions were getting.

Is it true that Pechanga's benefits are better than other casinos?

One thing I have noticed, we don't see Pechanga's neighbor Pala laying off hundreds of people.

Let me tell you it's really bad working there at the moment. The moral is low and the threats are high.

The severance package is 1 weeks worth of pay and a weeks worth of pay for every year you have worked there.

Someone above asked if it was done by seniority, let me tell you it certainly was not. Each department had a quota. From there they where able to choose who hey let go. If you where not in their good side you where gone. Luckily I'm still working there.

More lay offs in November...

Pechanga Resort has become a disgrace to employees and guests. Since hiring Craig Clark as a general manager the appearance and atmosphere at Pechanga Resort has taken a severe downward spiral. Clark is a hachetman who lacks any vision or future for the once prominant casino. The PDC is fully to blame for allowing the mistreatment of employees, guests and tribal members. They fully knew what they were getting when they brought in a G.M who's only vision is to cut, slash and cut every corner including employee moral, guest satisfaction and the cleanliness and appearance of Pechanga Resort and Casino. Unfortunately Clark has more than one year left on a 2 year contract that is paying him in excess of $400,000 per year. PDC should have had the common sense to cut bait before the decay set in. At this point the damage is far to great for any short term fix.

I heard that Mr. Clark was escorted out recently. Any details on this?

Was wondering why he was let go? It's no secret nation-wide that the tribe / whoever runs the place (council?) has no concept of what it takes in terms of creating a stable management team and build from there. How many marketing vice presidents have there been in the past 3 years - 5? they all could not have been that bad. But since all the good people in the industry know how unstable it is there, you get what you get...
